Hot tub Chemical Chemistry Lesson!

Chemicals are vital to keep the hot tub water clean and bacteria free.  Levels will differ for different types of water e.g. Hardness/softness, but here is a guide to checking the quality.

When the hot tub is installed and filled, we will adjust the levels to the required range although they may change slightly when the water warms up. Please bear in mind that the more the hot tub is used and the more people who use it, the more the chemicals will need to be checked (at the end of each day is advisable).

The test strips are colour coded to help you to achieve the right levels and there are guide tables on the side of the relevant tubs.  When making calculations please bear in mind that the hot tub holds approx 1500 ltrs of water.

As a guide, if the Chlorine indicator is low (white 0 to 0.5 on scale) then two level scoops of granules will bring the level back up. ( 1 scoop =15grams)

If the ph level is low, approx 6.0, then I level scoop of ‘ph-up’ should bring the level back up. Likewise if the ph level is too high, approx 8.5 then ‘ph-down’ should reduce the levels.

Chemicals need to be added an hour before people enter the hot tub and therefore usually at the end of the day is the best time to treat the water.

PH-up                        Reading of below 6.6 add 20 grams                                (1 level scoop =10grams)

Reading of 6.6 to 7.0 add 15 grams

Reading of 7.0 to 7.2 add 10 grams

PH-down                   Reading of 8.0 or more add 80 grams

Reading of 7.8 to 8.0 add 45 grams

Finally Alkalinity booster will stabilise ph levels once they are within range.   This should be approx 40grams for 1500 ltrs of water
